The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has given a response to the recent announcement of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger leaving the community. ECOWAS has reassured the nations of their importance and is committed to finding a negotiated solution to address the political challenges in these countries.
Although ECOWAS has not officially received any formal notification regarding the withdrawal of the three Member States, it remains steadfast in its dedication to work collaboratively with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to restore constitutional order.
The decision of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to depart from ECOWAS was declared on Sunday, citing concerns that the community has deviated from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism. In response, ECOWAS affirmed its dedication to adhering to the directives from the Authority of Heads of State and Government and working towards a resolution to the political impasse.
Despite the current leadership in these countries being held by military authorities who took control from civilian leaders, ECOWAS underlined the ongoing significance of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali as essential members of the regional community. The organization remains committed to finding a solution to the political challenges and strengthening ties with these nations.
