The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has recently announced that the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will receive an increase in prize money.
The winning team of the 2023 edition of the continental tournament to be held in Ivory Coast will receive $7 million, which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON prize money.
The runner-up of the competition will also get $4 million, each of the two semi-finalists will receive $2.5 million, while each of the four quarterfinalists gets $1.3 million.
Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the President of CAF, expressed his confidence that this increase in prize money will be beneficial for all football stakeholders and assist member associations with their administrations.
He also said that CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the prize money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions.
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament will start on January 13, 2023, and the final will be held on February 11, 2024.
