Former President John Mahama has urged eligible Ghanaian voters to participate in the upcoming District-Level Elections.
In a tweet, he stated that it is the civic responsibility of every eligible voter to come out and vote.
He also mentioned that he will be voting later in the day to elect Assembly and Unit Committee Members for his electoral area in Bole.
Mahama emphasized the importance of voting in the district-level elections and called on everyone to work together to shape the future of their communities.
He used the hashtag #Mahama24HourEconomy: Impacting Local Economic Development in his tweet.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also called on Ghanaians to fully participate in the District-Level Elections, which are expected to be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.
In a statement signed by the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, several reasons that have contributed to the low turnouts in the past District Assembly Elections were catalogued.
Mr. Nketiah stated that Ghanaians will elect new Assembly and Unit Committee members who will constitute the various Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies over the next four years.
He further emphasized that this exercise is an essential part of Ghana’s local and decentralization governance, which was birthed by the first government of the Fourth Republic, under the able leadership of His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings of blessed memory.
According to him, Ghana’s local government system has been acclaimed on the African continent for giving true meaning to governance and participation in development at the local level.
However, Nketiah expressed concern about the low level of public interest in the upcoming elections, which will mark the eighth time since Ghana started holding District-level elections.
