The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced his intention to summon the Finance and Energy Ministers and the Attorney General to Parliament.
This is about the recent release of GH¢230 million to pay off a judgment debt owed to Trafigura.
Trafigura, which owns the majority stake in the power company Ghana Power Generation Company (GPGC), was awarded $170 million in January 2021 by an arbitral tribunal in London.
The tribunal found that Ghana had unlawfully terminated a contract to install and operate two power plants.
The government has already released $20 million to initiate the payment process. Still, Ablakwa is concerned about the significant amount of money involved and the impact it could have had on other areas of development in the country.
He plans to summon the ministers to find out why the decision was made and potentially initiate a vote of censure.
Ablakwa believes that the funds could have been better used to build roads, and hospitals, solve water problems, and address housing challenges for displaced persons.
