Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) general secretary Kwabena Agyepong has declared that after Ken Ofori-Atta decided to ask the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout, he ought to have resigned as minister of finance.
Mr. Agyepong asserts that people ought to be humble and give up when they fail.
After saying at first that Ghana would not approach the IMF for help, Ofori-Atta completely changed his mind and approached the organization a few weeks later, asking for a bailout to support the collapsing economy.
Mr. Agyepong claimed in an interview on Starr FM that such behaviour ought to result in resignation in a democracy that is functioning. He disapproved of the President’s choice to remain silent and keep the Finance Minister in place.
“We are not going to the IMF, he [Ofori-Atta] had declared in front of all Ghanaians, and in a matter of weeks, we completely reversed course. And I said, “You step down as a human being in any respectable democracy.” I disagree with the President for not acting to allow him to leave, as he made the decision not to go.
He continued: “Again it is important that we have the humility that we have been through a lot of difficulties, difficult times, and challenges. Although the government has delivered on several fronts there are other fronts that we have struggled with.”
Mr Agyepong also dismissed the notion that he has something against the Minister for Finance.
“Sometimes, people create the impression that I have an issue with him but I don’t.”
