The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital’s management has been instructed by Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, the Minister of Health, to reopen the renal dialysis unit for outpatient services quickly.
The exorbitant cost of dialysis consumables, according to management, was the reason behind the Unit’s closure to outpatient services in May 2023.
The Minister of Health has ordered the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to promptly reopen the Unit for outpatient services.
“The Minister has given the Korle-Bu Chief Executive Officer urgent instructions to see that the centre opens. In addition, the Minister instructed Korle-Bu to release a statement as soon as the centre opens so that the public knows exactly what is happening and when they can access the location.”
On Wednesday, September 27, the Unit was partially reopened and the dialysis treatment rate was increased from GHS 380 to GHS 765.42 per session.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh wants Parliament to summon the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman Manu over the closure of the outpatient department of the Renal Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
A total of 19 outpatients of the renal unit have died since it was closed in May 2023 due to a 4 million Ghana Cedi debt.
In a statement on the floor of Parliament, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee of Parliament stressed the need for the government to provide an update on the measures taken towards reopening the facility.
