20 judges and magistrates, including four justices of the Supreme Court, have retired from their positions in the Judiciary.
According to the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG), this is the highest number of judges and magistrates who have ever retired in a single legal year (2022/23).
There are eight more retirees this year than there were in the legal year 2021–2022, which had 12 retirees.
This was disclosed at the AMJG’s 42nd annual general meeting in Accra by Justice Henry Attorney Kwofie, the organization’s president and a judge on the Court of Appeal.
Four justices of the Apex Court, including former Chief Justice Anin Yeboah, Justice Jones Victor Dotse, Justice Nene Amegatcher, and Justice Prof. Nii Ashie Kotey, are among the retirees.
Nine District Court Magistrates, one representative from the High Court, one from the Circuit Court, and five Justices of the Court of Appeal round out the group.
They were all given citations at the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana’s 42nd Annual Conference, which took place on September 27 and with the topic, “Supporting Women in the Legal Profession.”
Justice Henry Anthony Kwofie, president of the AMJG, announced this year’s retirement from the bench by saying, “This year, 20 of our members in the various hierarchy of the courts have retired or are about to retire after several years of dedicated service to the Judicial Service and the Country.”
According to the AMJG President, this is the largest number of judges and magistrates who have ever retired in a single legal year.
As stated by Murtala Inusah, the Legal Affairs Correspondent for EIB Network, the 2023–2024 fiscal year officially began on Monday, October 2, 2023, and will expire on July 31, 2024.
The Association has also lost four members since the AMJG’s previous annual general meeting in September 2022.
They included His Lordship Justice Frank Manu, a former High Court judge known as “Teacher Manu,” Her Ladyship Justice Naana Buadi-Addo Abubakar, a Justice of the High Court, Her Honor Marvin Emmanuel Essandoh, a Circuit Court judge, and His Worship Divine Ahiadu.
