A man allegedly peddling fake electricity meters in Adentan was caught by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
After months of thorough research by ECG staff, this is what was discovered.
The suspect in question, a carpenter by trade, has admitted to taking part in an illegal scheme that comprised the sale of some 40 fake power meters.
This operation was carried out by the ECG’s Accra East Region in response to data amassed over several months. The area around the Adentan New Site was the main focus of the intelligence gathering.
The suspected carpenter admitted that he bought fake meters from a nearby local assemblyman who reportedly gave them to him to sell.
According to him, he bought the fake meters for GH800 each and then sold them for GH900, generating a profit on each transaction.
The suspect will be arraigned on September 29, according to Paul Assibi Abariga, the General Manager in charge of Legal and Prosecution at ECG. He also stated that continued attempts are being made to find and capture any further potential accomplices who may have been involved in the operation.
The alleged meter peddler gave more information, admitting that he had been selling these fake meters illegally for more than seven months and had distributed about 40 of them during that time.
This operation represents a crucial turning point in the ongoing fight against fraud in the electricity sector. It seeks to protect consumers against fake and unreliable meters while holding offenders responsible for their conduct.
