Kennedy Agyapong, a member of parliament for Assin Central, received the most votes in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) most recent round of voting for its November 4 presidential primaries.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be the second contender on the ballot, followed by former Agriculture Minister Dr. Afriyie Akoto in third place and Addae Nimo in fourth place.
Kennedy Agyapong, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, Joe Ghartey, Kwadwo Poku, and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto were among the initial 10 competitors.
Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Francis Addai Nimoh, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia were the others.
When the Super Delegates Congress was conducted on August 26, Addae Nimo and Boakye Agyarko tied for first place, bringing the total down to six.
With 629 votes overall—or 68.15% of the total valid votes—Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) super delegates conference.
Kennedy Agyapong, a member of parliament for Assin Central, came in second with 132 votes, or 14.30%, and Alan Kyerematen, a former trade minister, came in third with 95 votes, or 10.29%.
Eventually, Mr Agyarko withdrew from the race saying he wanted to save the NPP the cost of conducting another election between him and Mr Addae Nimo.
Alan withdraws from race
Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the party’s flagbearer candidate, withdrew from the presidential contest.
He made this announcement in a statement dated September 5, 2023, in which he listed the occurrences that he claimed contributed to his withdrawal after the party’s Super Delegates Conference.
He cancelled a planned press conference to address the public on his political future early on.
Modalities
Speaking at the balloting on Wednesday, September 13, the Chairman of the NPP Presidential Election Committee, Prof Mike Oquaye, said the candidates have all been briefed on the dos and don’ts in the upcoming election.
