Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the Paramount Chief of Mampong in the Ashanti region, has advised Parliament to make sure that the anti-LGBTQ+ bill is passed in order to protect the nation’s culture.
Speaking at the Christop Heyns African Human Rights Moot Court Competition at KNUST in Kumasi, he said this.
According to Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, LGBTQ+ acts are incompatible with Ghanaian culture, beliefs, and social norms and shouldn’t be supported in any way.
He has issued a stern warning to the legislature, saying that if Ghana were to follow the example of the United States and legalize LGBTQ+ activities, traditional leaders would vehemently object.
“We should sit here, cut our culture just because we have acquired degrees in European universities just like what we have established here? I should throw away our culture we’ve inherited from time immemorial before the white man came here, before the Portuguese pretended they were putting up castles at Elmina and whatnot? To throw them (Ghana’s culture) away because of dollars over there? Permit a man to kiss a man and a woman to kiss a woman, please I don’t need to talk about it over here.”
He also gave the legislature a notice that traditional leaders in Ghana will vehemently oppose any move to legalize LGBTQ+ activities should Ghana do the same as the United States.
“We have our own in Ghana’s parliament, and woe betide those lawmakers if they try to imitate what is occurring in America. They’ll come to our respective kingdoms to meet us.
