As champions of the Ghana Premier League Medeama SC prepare for their inaugural CAF Champions League campaign, President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo has promised to contribute a sum of GHC1 million to the team.
Prior to their first Champions League match, which is scheduled for later this month, the Tarkwa-based squad visited the president on Wednesday and gave him the Ghana Premier League trophy.
The champions were accompanied to Jubilee House by George Mireku Duker, Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Mines and Natural Resources. There were also representatives from the management and technical teams, chiefs from the Apinto Traditional Council, Dr. Tony Aubynn, the club’s board chairman, head coach Evans Augustine Adotey, and others.
He made a pledge to the Yellow and Mauves after speaking with the president, signaling his willingness to give the money and his likelihood of being present when the club plays the Nigerian team Remo Stars on August 18 at the Cape Coast stadium.
“I will try to provide a million Ghana Cedis to help you in the CAF campaign,” he told the club.
“The deputy minister is insisting that if I’m in Ghana on the 20th, I should come to Cape Coast. I’ll see.
“We’ll do our best.”
Medeama became champions of Ghana after leapfrogging Aduana Stars in the latter stages of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League season and gained the right to represent the nation in the renowned Continental championship.
“Congratulations to you, the captain, and the members of the team for this historic achievement,” Akufo-Addo added.
“It’s been 47 years since a team from the Western Region won the cup. This is great. You’ve done a great job. Congratulations.”
After the first leg, Medeama will travel to Nigeria for the second leg on August 25.
The winner of the tie will proceed to face Guinean giants Horoya with a group stage spot up for grabs.
The last time Medeama participated in CAF inter-club competitions was in 2016 when they beat South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns to make it to the Group stages.
