Sylvester Tetteh, a member of parliament for Bortianor Ngleshie-Amanfrom, expressed his satisfaction after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stated that he did not have a preferred candidate in the NPP’s presidential primaries, pointing out that the delegates would ultimately decide the party’s leadership.
“This is not the first time the president has made such a statement, so we are not surprised by his clarification,” Mr. Tetteh said during an interview on Thursday’s episode of Dwaso Nsem, the morning program on Adom FM.
Mr. Tetteh refuted reports that Alan Kyerematen’s camp had an impact on the President’s stance, saying that Alan had already made it plain that he was not looking for endorsements.
He added that Alan Kyerematen’s team was actively involved in their grassroots campaign and had no problems with their efforts, saying, “We fight our elections based on our merits and will not use anyone’s name for campaigning.”
Similar thoughts were repeated by Nana Akomea, managing director of the State Transport Company and a supporter of President Akufo-Addo. Nana Akomea is from the Bawumia camp.
He assured everyone that the President’s remarks had no impact on their campaign, saying, “What he said is okay, and we have no problems with it as we continue with our regular campaign activities.”
During a meeting with party communicators at the Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that he would vote for a candidate who could bring the party together and win the upcoming presidential election in order to unseat the NDC’s John Dramani Mahama.
Dr. Bawumia and former Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen appeared to be in a close battle for the NPP presidency.
