Assin North MP James Gyakye Quayson’s request for a stay in his ongoing criminal case was denied by the High Court today, July 11.
The Court claims that the reasons put out by his lawyer do not rise to the level necessary for his application to be approved.
Although his principal attorney Tsatsu Tsikata expressed dismay with the decision, he also made clear that they intended to apply to the Court of Appeal for a stay of the proceedings.
In order for the Court of Appeal to consider the trial judge’s choice to handle the case on a daily basis, Mr. Tsikata has asked the court to pause proceedings.
Until the outcome of the appeal, which was filed in the court on June 27, 2023, Mr. Quayson petitioned the court for an order to stop the proceedings.
On June 23, 2023, an Accra High Court presided over by Justice Maame Ekue Yanzuh issued a decision denying the applicant’s request for a review and/or modification of earlier court rulings from June 16, 2023.
The petitioner has filed an appeal against the decision since they are not happy with it.
However, the court has upheld its earlier decision that the application is not justified.
Already, it was anticipated that the NDC group in Parliament would abstain from participating in the Assin North case.
