The Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) of the Eastern Regional Police Command intervened in time to stop the youth of Nkurakan from lynching several police intelligence department (PID) officers who were accompanying some alleged drug dealers to the regional command.
The youth in Nkurakan stopped the PID officials from the regional command, who were wearing muftis and driving a taxi cab that they had utilized in the intelligence activities. The young believed that they were kidnappers.
According to officials at the regional command who spoke to Citi News, the intelligence division had been following a significant marijuana seller who supplies marijuana to customers in Koforidua for months.
From Huhunya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality, where it is produced, processed, packaged, and sealed before being finally picked up by the delivery person for further supplies, the suspect, who is a member of a syndicate, has been supplying marijuana.
The delivery person, a lady in her late 30s, eventually guided the PID staff, who had disguised themselves as customers and asked to buy in big quantities, to the main supplier.
The woman consented to make business with the cops after meeting them in disguise, but she ran into trouble when she pulled out the package to be sold. The personnel then identified themselves before handcuffing her.
The woman, who was being brought to the taxi by the officers alongside the delivery boy, told her neighbors that the officers were kidnappers in the Krobo language.
When the staff arrived in Nkurakan, they were greeted by a furious teenager who had blocked the road with motorcycles and was pleading for the suspects’ release.
The youngsters, who had earlier been informed that they were kidnappers, also demanded their rapid release so that they could be lynched, so the PID officials sprinted into the Nkurakan police station to find protection as soon as they felt threatened.
Armed CTU officers who had been sent to the area engaged the kids in a standoff.
The cab that had initially been used to transport the suspects was set on fire as a result of the tense situation.
However, the youngsters threw stones at the police to stop them from rescuing the PID staff, which resulted in a severe traffic jam in the vicinity for several hours.
Before being able to whisk away the cops and 7 suspects, including the wanted drug dealer, to Koforidua, where they had been taken into custody, the armed police fired numerous warning shots into the air.
