In connection with violent attacks on Mempeasem and Lukula communities in the Savannah Region by opposing factions in land and chieftaincy conflicts, police have detained three people and are looking for more.
The police claim that on May 30, 2023, a gang of about fifty people broke into the Mempeasem neighborhood and abducted a 50-year-old man.
But when the cops intervened to stop the attack, the gang hid in the bushes.
The abducted victim was successfully rescued by the police, who also removed one (1) AK-47 firearm, 14 rounds of ammo, seven (7) motorcycles, and two (2) bicycles from the scene of the crime.
A backpack carrying 240 AK-47 rounds was also found during a search for the suspects in the neighborhood, according to police.
“On 1st June 2023, the Police, while on patrols within the communities, responded to another distress call of an attack by another gang in the Lukula community”.
When the police arrived, the aforementioned suspects, who were on the loose, torching homes and shooting people at random, started firing at them.
Razak Sulemana, Musah Shanun, and Karim Abdul Rafiuw were three of the suspects who were subsequently captured by the police when they responded swiftly.
The three suspects are currently being treated at a medical facility for gunshot wounds they received during their capture, according to authorities.
One (1) pump action gun, two (2) single barrel guns, one long knife, 80 live cartridges, a few talismans, and cowries were found during a search on them.
After the situation was brought under control, the police revealed that they had information that an 81-year-old man of the Lukula village had been shot on his farm by the erroneous gang.
When the police arrived at the farm, his children assisted in bringing him to the hospital, where he was later declared dead.
The Daboya Police Station was attacked, resulting in damage to accident cars parked there and several louvre blades within the barracks. The attackers were thought to be sympathizers of those captured following the police contact with the suspects and the ensuing arrests. However, the Police fought back and seized charge of the situation.
Since then, peace was restored and security has been reinforced in Daboya and the areas around it to fend off additional attacks. There are currently efforts being made to apprehend the offenders, including those who attacked the police station, so they can answer for their crimes.
